Kerry Phillips

Kerry Phillips is a children's book author who uses his combined experience as a veteran of the military, and his current profession in law enforcement, to teach children the importance of using their words and expressing their emotions. Teachers and parents, who would love to see their children express themselves more effectively with words, should look no further than Captain Smiley: The Adventure of The Bouncy Frisbee. Kerry believes it is vital for kids to learn how to express themselves with words when they experience various emotions, such as anger, frustration, or even happiness. Tapping into social and emotional learning, Kerry uses Captain Smiley to bridge the gap between children and their emotional outlets.

Verbal Expression

“It is amazing to see children take their time to breathe and think before using their words. It shows how a few seconds can change the projection of emotions. I believe every child, if given the right tools, can express themselves verbally in a calm manner.” -KP

Why an Early Graphic Novel?

Kerry believes a graphic novel helps increase children’s abilities to comprehend a story line through visual art. It allows children to infer, using context clues, as they read along. It also brings out their creativity. Thus, Kerry decided to write a graphic novel to introduce the world to a different type of superhero. The superhero world has existed for decades. However, introducing Captain Smiley, while focusing on social and emotional development, allows for a different spectrum to emerge in the universe of superheroes.
